Description

Kencur (Kaempferia rhizoma)
Indonesia Standard Quality Grade

Kencur (Kaempferia galanga) is a tropical herbal plant native to Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, where it has been traditionally used as a culinary spice and herbal medicine. Its aromatic rhizome has a distinctive spicy, warm, and slightly pungent character and is widely used in Indonesian traditional cuisine and herbal preparations.

ORIGIN:
Native to Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and surrounding regions. It is widely cultivated across the Indonesian archipelago and is well adapted to warm, humid tropical environments.

PLANTING:
Thrives in warm tropical climates with temperatures of approximately 20–30°C, adequate rainfall, and loose, fertile, well-drained soil. Kencur is propagated using healthy rhizome pieces with viable buds. The rhizomes are planted in shallow holes or planting beds, preferably at the beginning of the rainy season.

HARVESTING:
Timing: Harvested when the plant has reached maturity, generally around 8–12 months after planting, depending on the intended use.

Method:
The soil surrounding the plant is carefully loosened, and the rhizomes are lifted from the ground. The harvested rhizomes are cleaned from soil and other impurities, sorted, and processed for fresh use or dried as herbal raw material.
