Cengkih (Syzygium aromaticum) is a tropical evergreen tree native to the Maluku Islands of Indonesia. Its dried flower buds are widely valued as a distinctive aromatic spice and are used in culinary, herbal, pharmaceutical, fragrance, and essential-oil applications.

ORIGIN

Native to the Maluku Islands of Indonesia, particularly the historic Spice Islands, clove is now cultivated in various tropical regions. Indonesia remains one of the world’s major clove-producing countries.

PLANTING

Clove trees thrive in warm, humid tropical climates with adequate rainfall, sufficient sunlight, and fertile, well-drained soil. They are commonly propagated from healthy seeds or seedlings and planted in prepared soil with adequate spacing. Young trees require appropriate moisture, shade protection during early growth, and good soil drainage.

HARVESTING

Timing:
Clove flower buds are harvested before they fully open, when the buds have reached maturity and developed their characteristic green to reddish coloration.

Method:
The mature flower buds are carefully picked by hand or harvested using appropriate tools. The harvested buds are then sorted and dried naturally or using controlled drying methods until they develop their characteristic dark brown color, aroma, and moisture level.
