Bawang Putih (Allium sativum) is a bulb-forming plant widely cultivated and used as an important culinary spice. It is valued for its distinctive pungent aroma, savory flavor, and versatile applications in food, herbal preparations, nutraceuticals, and personal-care products.

ORIGIN

Native to Central Asia, garlic has been cultivated for thousands of years and is now grown widely throughout the world, including Indonesia. It is cultivated in various regions of Indonesia, particularly in suitable highland and moderate-climate areas.

PLANTING

Garlic grows best in cool to moderate climates with adequate sunlight, sufficient moisture, and loose, fertile, well-drained soil. It is commonly propagated by planting healthy individual cloves. The cloves are planted directly into prepared soil, usually with the pointed end facing upward and appropriate spacing to allow proper bulb development.

HARVESTING

Timing:
Garlic is generally harvested approximately 3–5 months after planting, depending on the variety, planting conditions, and cultivation practices. Harvest maturity is commonly indicated when the leaves begin to turn yellow and dry.

Method:
The soil surrounding the plants is carefully loosened, and the mature bulbs are lifted from the ground. The bulbs are then cleaned, sorted, and dried or cured to reduce moisture and improve storage quality.
