ORIGIN: Native to tropical regions of Central and South America, Swietenia macrophylla is now widely cultivated and naturalized in many tropical regions, including Indonesia, particularly in areas with warm climates, sufficient rainfall, and fertile, well-drained soils.
PLANTING: Thrives in warm tropical climates with temperatures around 20–30°C, adequate rainfall, sufficient sunlight, and fertile, well-drained soil. It is commonly propagated from healthy seeds planted in nurseries or directly in prepared planting areas. Young plants require adequate moisture and sufficient growing space to develop into mature trees.
HARVESTING:
- Timing: Seeds are harvested when the mahogany fruits are mature and the woody capsules begin to turn brown and naturally open, generally around 6–8 months after flowering, depending on environmental and growing conditions.
- Method: Mature fruits are collected from the tree or ground after natural shedding and opening. The woody fruit capsules are opened carefully, and the winged seeds are separated, cleaned, sorted, and dried according to the intended product specification.
