Description
Kayu Secang (Sappan lignum)
Indonesia Standard Quality Grade

Kayu Secang (Caesalpinia sappan) is a traditional Indonesian medicinal plant and natural dye source. The heartwood of this shrubby tree has been used for centuries as a key herbal ingredient in traditional Indonesian beverages and wellness practices, strongly associated with Javanese and Betawi cultural heritage.
ORIGIN: Native to Southeast Asia, including the tropical archipelagos of Indonesia. The plant naturally thrives in tropical lowland to medium-altitude environments, often found in scrublands, dry forests, and mountainous slopes.
PLANTING: Thrives in warm tropical climates with full sunlight. It is highly adaptable and can grow in various soil types, including dry, rocky, or clay soils, provided they are well-drained. It is typically cultivated from seeds or stem cuttings and requires minimal maintenance once established.
HARVESTING:
- Timing: Harvested when the tree has reached sufficient maturity, typically 1 to 3 years after planting, when the heartwood has fully developed its rich red color and dense texture.
- Method: The trunk and mature branches are cut, and the outer bark and pale sapwood are peeled away. The remaining deep red heartwood is cleaned, shaved into thin strips, or chipped for further processing.
Products
- Wood Shavings (Simplisia): Dried, thin shavings of the heartwood used as raw material for traditional herbal brews.
- Herbal Powder: Ground heartwood processed into a fine powder for herbal capsules or instant drinks.
- Herbal Drinks (Jamu): A foundational ingredient in traditional warming beverages like Wedang Uwuh (Yogyakarta) and Bir Pletok (Betawi).
- Extracts: Concentrated liquid or powder extracts used in modern phytopharmaceuticals and cosmetics.
- Natural Dye: Extracted for its vibrant red pigment (brazilin) used in textiles, food, and traditional crafts.
