Description

Brotowali (Tinospora caulis)
Indonesia Standard Quality Grade

Brotowali (Tinospora caulis or Tinospora crispa) is a climbing woody vine renowned in Indonesian traditional medicine for its intensely bitter taste. Its distinctly bumpy, warty stems are the foundational ingredient in jamu pahitan (bitter jamu), heavily relied upon for its potent medicinal and detoxifying properties.

ORIGIN: Native to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia, including Indonesia. It naturally thrives in lowland tropical forests, rural scrublands, and is frequently cultivated in household medicinal gardens (Toga) across Java and Bali.

PLANTING: Thrives in warm, tropical climates with adequate sunlight and moderate rainfall. As a climbing vine, it requires a trellis, fence, or host tree for support. It is highly resilient, adapts to various soil types, and is incredibly easy to propagate using mature stem cuttings.

HARVESTING:

  • Timing: Harvested when the vine has matured and the stems have grown thick, woody, and developed their characteristic prominent bumps (warts).
  • Method: The mature stems are cut from the vine. The leaves are usually stripped away, and the thick stems are washed, cut into smaller cylindrical sections, and either used fresh or sun-dried for long-term storage.

Products

  • Dried Stems (Simplisia): Sliced and sun-dried pieces of the bumpy stem, used as a raw material for herbal decoctions.
  • Herbal Drinks (Jamu): The primary ingredient in Jamu Pahitan, a traditional liquid brew known for its extreme bitterness and therapeutic effects.
  • Herbal Capsules & Powders: Ground stems encapsulated for modern consumers who want the benefits without the intense bitter taste.
  • Extracts: Concentrated active compounds used in commercial phytopharmaceuticals.
  • Natural Biopesticides: The intensely bitter extract is sometimes utilized in traditional agriculture to naturally deter pests.

  • Health & Wellness: Incorporated into detox and metabolic support supplements.
  • Agriculture: Explored as an eco-friendly, organic biopesticide due to its natural pest-repellent properties.
